Why Do I Need a Smog Check?

How Does It Work?
Your smog test will be conducted in 3 parts:
First, mechanics will visually inspect the vehicle to make sure that all emissions control devices are installed and functioning. Second, they will check that the emissions warning light is working. Finally, the car is hooked up to a testing device to get a reading from the tailpipe.

Does my Vehicle Need a Smog Check?
There are a few types of vehicles that are exempt from California smog check policy.
Special rules apply to smog tests for:
- Hybrids
- Electric cars
- Motorcycles
- Trailers
- Cars 6 years old or younger
- Cars made before 1976
If your car doesn’t fit into any of those categories, it will need to pass a smog test at least twice a year.
